For years I have planted my tomato seed by pressing into contact with the soil and leaving it be like natures way of just roping the seed and waiting for spring to start it growing. I always end up with gangly seedlings at first that I have contributed to warm temperatures provided in my seed starting light stand. I see plug trays of commerical seedlings of stocky little starts and wonder how they manage that. I always figgured they may be spraying them with a growth inhibiter now I wonder how they plant their seed.

Some seed packages say plant 1/2 inch deep which conflicts with the seed diameter rule for planting depth.

What depth do you use ?

Thanks Ernie
