Can anyone tell me what this trash grass is? After having a lawn service company put out herbicide then several weeks later fertilizer this grass has taken over our yard. thanks Cindy
That does favor the grass although what I read says it is not aggressive. This grass has covered more than 2 acres choking out bermuda in less than 2 months. The centipede and St Augustine have held their on with it but the bermuda did not.
Naturally I cannot find that again. I guess we caused this monster by heavy sprinkling. We should have let it dry since it was killing the other grass anyway. It holds a tremendous amount of water in those blades. Thanks for the ID KS we have never dealt with this form of crab grass. Now do you know how to control it? LOL
That same "grass" is killing our bermuda too. I didn't know anything could kill bermuda. We've got 5 acres and that stuff is going wild on it. We're planning to hit the whole yard with a good weed killer and then fertilize what's left of our bermuda to see if it can reclaim the yard.
Crabgrass is an annual, so most people around here apply a pre-emergent herbicide (Dimension/dithiopyr I think is the most common one used) to their lawns in early spring. Seems to be effective.
My solution is a little different. I generally mow my lawn to 3 to 3.5 inches tall rather than the customary 2 inches or less and rarely water more than once every two weeks. When I do water, I water deeply, putting on at least an inch and sometimes up to 2 inches of water at a time. Mowing grass very short combined with frequent watering really encourages the germination and spread of crabgrass. This works pretty well until you get a summer like this where we keep getting these quarter inch rain showers every few days. ;) Fortunately, we will get a frost in the next 6 or 8 weeks and that will be the end of it until next summer.
