If it was over here, I'd say Welted Thistle Carduus crispus. Not sure if (a) this is widely naturalised or not in WA, or (b) if you have any other similar native thistles.

The plant matches up with Carduus crispus very well. It is naturalized across the U.S. and Canada.

The USDA database doesn't list it as occurring in WA--doesn't mean it's impossible since it does occur next door in British Columbia so I suspect there are probably a few around, but the fact that they don't list it there makes me suspect it's not very widespread. I don't know if it's worth taking a look at the other Carduus species that are more common in WA--here's the list [HYPERLINK@plants.usda.gov]

Before you do that, take a close look at Cirsium Arvense-Canada thistle. It's native & prevalent in WA.

Also check out Cirsium undulatum & compare it to yours.

Canada thistle, in spite of the common name, is not native to North America. It certainly is prevalent in many places, including Washington, though!

I can't see the leaves clearly enough to say what species of thistle it is, but you might also take a look at Cirsium vulgare.

Ned – it’s not Cirsium Arvense. Mine is far pinker and the “petals” go up rather than out like hair.

Could be Cirsium undulatum, but its foliage seems to dark.

Here is the whole plant.

Correct name for Cirsium arvense is Creeping Thistle: [HYPERLINK@ip30.eti.uva.nl] . It's also a very different plant to the mystery thistle.

Well, looking at the leaves, it is certainly not Cirsium undulatum or Cirsium vulgare.
