On Saturdays, the Writer's Group would like to say thanks by presenting a "You Supply The Caption" photo. A gardening related photo will be presented, and you the Readers will provide humorous captions. The wit available on Dave's is some of the best around, so please join in the fun! This feature is not a "for compensation" article - just our way of saying Thanks for reading. Hope you enjoy...now let's hear some funny stuff!

  About Dea O'Hopp
Dea O'HoppI'm a long time DG'er, super merry wife to the greatest guy on this earth, Michael. By day, we're self employed Mortgage Bankers along with my son Andy. By evenings and weekends we're gardeners trying to get the best out of 3 acres that we can. Andy and DDIL Michelle gave us the greatest gift of all this past year. We hope to inspire our Grandson to have the same love of gardening we do. I truly hope you'll enjoy the occasional articles I submit and most importantly have fun cooking from your garden or your local farms. Happy Gardening and Garden Cooking to all!

Subject: Il a la patate!

Posted by jjacques (from LE TAMPON
(Reunion (French))) on August 16, 2008 at 10:11 AM:

When we French people say about someone 'il a la patate' it means he really look great and full of energy which is what this Mr Blue looks like!

...

Posted by CMoxon (from Urbandale, IA) on August 16, 2008 at 12:39 PM:

Tres bien!

...

Posted by Dea (from Frederick, MD) on August 16, 2008 at 1:57 PM:

That's great :)

...

Posted by jjacques (from LE TAMPON
(Reunion (French))) on August 17, 2008 at 2:04 AM:

By the way, how would you say in English 'il a la patate'? There must be some colloquial for sure.

...

Posted by CMoxon (from Urbandale, IA) on August 17, 2008 at 9:40 AM:

That's a tough one - I speak relatively good French, and I knew that expression, although English is my first language. Even so, I can't really think of an equivalent expression. One maybe similar expression is "in the pink" which means that somebody is in very good health and spirit. It's about the closest I can think of, and that's more of an expression in England than in the US.

...

Posted by jjacques (from LE TAMPON
(Reunion (French))) on August 17, 2008 at 11:03 AM:

So you'd say 'he (she!) is in the pink'? Being good in French you may know this other expression 'il péte le feu' which is close to 'il a la patate' but even more expressive...I will not translate this one literally of course.

...

Posted by CMoxon (from Urbandale, IA) on August 17, 2008 at 5:53 PM:

Ha! An excellent expression - I did not know that one before! But it is indeed very expressive!! I will have to try that one out with a French friend of mine this week and see his expression!

And yes, you have the use of "in the pink" just right!

...

Posted by jjacques (from LE TAMPON
(Reunion (French))) on August 18, 2008 at 12:22 AM:

If you use this one your French friend will be flabbergasted

...

Posted by LarryR (from South Amana, IA) on August 22, 2008 at 11:57 AM:

..and perhaps laughing so hard that he literally illustrates the expression!

...

Oh!!! Try it!

Great caption, by the way. So...green!
