All but one plant grew immediately and it was replaced within a couple of days and is now flowering beautifully along with all the rest. Regardless of their size upon arrival, they've all matured into gorgeous flowering specimens. The service was gracious and I will definately order again. They were also very patient with me and my numerous calls. I can't wait to get my Fall order! Thanks so much, Bluestone. | | Positive | YB (4 reviews) | On July 27, 2008, YB Kittanning, PA wrote: I have purchased both Lupines and Delphiniums. Both came well packaged with directions. I was very impressed by the healthy plants they shipped and the specialized packing each received - we actually saved a few little packing containers because they were unique in our experience. My Dragon Garden is going great guns - my hosta are beautiful and I even received several free bonus items, one of which will become a staple in my flower beds. Last year, my experience with Direct Gardening was utterly miserable! So, I am happy to say Bluestone was the polar opposite. I won't hesitate to recommend them to others. | | Positive | 19082 (3 reviews) | On July 21, 2008, 19082 Upper Darby, PA (Zone 6b) wrote:I have ordered from this company for several years, always with good results. The price is extremely reasonable, the plants healthy, and the service excellent. Often they also offer specials and coupons, which makes their prices even better. In the past few years this company has discontinued some plants that I wanted to order and upon inquiring, they give me information on other mail order nurseries who would have what I was looking for. So, for me it is all positive, and I have and would suggest Bluestone to anyone wanting to order plants through the mail. | | Neutral | yotedog (5 reviews) | On July 12, 2008, yotedog Raleigh, NC wrote: I ordered three Gaillardia 'Tokajer' in January, and received them in late spring, pretty well packed, but a little smashed. Certainly in good enough condition to grow well, though. BP's plants are small, but the price is right, so I took the little plants, potted them up right away, then, eventually, moved them into the garden in ideal conditions. They grew wonderfully, but, alas, it soon became evident that I had received the wrong plant. They shot up about 4 ft (too tall for Gaillardia) and I kept trying to identify them, assuming they were some other cultivated plant......until it became clear that they were a common weed that I see everyday on the side of the road!!! I contacted BP by email, then phone, (they had not replied to my email after 48 hours, though, as it turned out, they had already taken care of the matter) and they have promised replacements, but as it is midsummer, and they are no longer shipping, I will miss a whole season's growth. I monitored these plants CLOSELY, each day (this was a plant I really wanted)--the weeds were clearly in the pots upon delivery, one per pot, right in the center. There is absolutely no way they were introduced at my house, or that the pots contained the correct cultivar. On the plus side, I did get great customer service....but shipping weeds....clearly a quality control issue!! Especially with an early-in-the-season order... | | Positive | evelyn_inthegarden (8 reviews) | On July 8, 2008, evelyn_inthegarden Grizzly Flats, CA wrote: I purchased more than one order on sale, as my gardens have been neglected due to 4 operations in these last 4 years. So the orders were quite large and mostly sale plants. When I received a few that were looking "not so good", I received a prompt replacement with no hassles whatsoever, after all, these were the ones on the last clearance sale. So, I would reccomend this company.
The service was excellent, and they even told me where I could recycle the other packing "peanuts", and from other companies as well. I hauled them off to my local UPS store and they were happy to get them. They did not pay me for them, but at least I recycled them.
So all of the plants are growing well now, even some that I have cut back (Thyme), as they were the ones that were replaced, and now all of them are looking nice now.
Yes, most of the plants are small, but if you need a lot of plants to fill in an area, their prices can't be beat! I have ordered from others as well, so I will list those ratings according to the names of the companies.
Thank you Bluestone Perennials!

Their 50% off sale can't be beat for value and selection. The plants are tiny and most of them have arrived fairly ugly looking. I'll put it this way--if I saw these plants at a garden center I wouldn't pick them out of the flat. My first order the asters Iooked like they are on their last legs and I requested a replacement. They are EXCELLENT about replacement--but you will have to wait for them because they will not ship until the heat of the summer has past. (Excellent practice in my book)
I've not lost any of the plants--even the nearly dead leafless ones have been resurrected with a little care. All have done really well after a year settling in. Their prices on clematis are EXCELLENT and these looked especially healthy of the bunch I ordered this spring.
I would never order from bluestone at full price, but during their big sales, I would highly recommend them. | | Positive | eleavell (2 reviews) | On July 1, 2008, eleavell Somerset, NJ wrote: I just got lupines from Bluestone (on sale) and was very pleased with the size and condition. These plants are of the highest quality and very vigorous growers. I am 100% satisfied with their products and would definitely buy from them again and recommend them to other gardeners. It is now less than two months since planting and most are in gorgeous bloom and filling in beautifully. Haven't yet put the plants in the newly created bed. As mentioned in other post, the sweet woodruff, in particular, is beautiful and, after 4-5 days on my patio, loving life. Plants arrived extremely promptly, packed with care (re: plastic peanut complaints-- the company now has a very well explained method in place whereby you may return them for reuse; seems they have been listening to customers' comments), soil still damp. When I emailed them yesterday that, after a few days on my porch (which they reccommend), that 1 forget me not plant had died and 2 others were looking sickly, they immediately responded today, without discussion, that they'd replace them and to expect new plants next week. I appreciate the chance to buy smaller plants at an economical price (plus which, even in the week since they've arrived, I see noticeable growth-- the Laminium shell pink is already maybe 10-15% larger!)
I rarely leave comments/feedback for retailers, but have been so happy with the (relatively rare) high standard of service with this company that I decided to post. | | Positive | ruktdid (3 reviews) | On June 17, 2008, ruktdid Milltown, NJ wrote: Great company to deal with--I placed several orders over the last couple of years. I love their early-bird specials, half-price sales, and incentive coupons, but what keeps me coming back are their healthy plants and consistently good service. The plants are always packed well and arrive when Bluestone's email says they will. I have only had one 3-pack fail to make it (an herb), and Bluestone immediately credited my account. I always follow their care instructions and the plants always do well. My callicarpa is amazing, and the hardy gardenia (which arrived with no buds) is blooming and has four more buds ready to bloom (the fragrance is heavenly). I have also ordered: mock orange, Leycesteria formosa, caryopteris (Longwood Blue), wintergreen, aquilegia (several), cardinal lobelia, clematis, phlox subulata, dianthus barbatus, tricyrtis, asters (purple dome), and several groundcovers (plus the bonus plants). This is my favorite mail-order plant place. I _trust_ Bluestone. | | Positive | wyldeflwr (6 reviews) | On June 17, 2008, wyldeflwr Laurel, MD (Zone 7a) wrote:I can't say enough good things about this company. My plants arrived in great shape and were packaged very well. I waited 3 days to plant them to get them acclimated. So far my daylilies and gaillardia are holding their own. I'm not too sure about the columbines yet. If my plants survive and flourish I will definitely buy from them again. I recently placed and order and was a bit underwhelmed with my purchase.
Price was always their biggest advantage for me. Their plants have always been somewhere between seedlings and plants. They always arrived a little beat up, but usually did well once planted. I was always willing to accept the small size and condition since they were a bargain.
I just ordered from them recently during their 50% spring sale. Seems like prices have gone up. Full prices were in the $8 - $14 range, which is higher than I remember. Even at 50% off, I don't think the value is still there. The prices have moved to a point where I expect a little more size/quality.

I ordered some grasses, chrysanthemums, dianthus, etc. during their half -price sale. The shipment came within a reasonable timeframe and was well packed (although I really don't like the use of styrofoam peanuts, surely something more ecologically friendly is available?). The plants were a bit on the small side, but healthy and are doing well after planting. A couple of items I had ordered were out of stock and were not charged to me. So I would order again from Bluestone, but would most likely wait for one of their sales, based on the cost versus the size of the product. | | Positive | englab4 (1 review) | On June 13, 2008, englab4 Ford City, PA wrote: Ordered from here because of ratings. I was verrrry wary of mail order again but BlueStone exceeded any hopes I had and then some...My plants arrived within a week of my order but that was because I ordered over the weekend..
I ordered 2 Clematis, a Giant Pussy Willow, and a Silver Lace Vine, and all arrived in excellent condition, very well packed in peanuts, and still damp soil...They even included a bag of fertilizer pellets for the plants...Who does that?? One of my Clematis does not look too happy today, so I will keep an eye on it, but the other is going gangbusters...
They will be getting ALL of my business from now on... | | Positive | JAFMArtin (3 reviews) | On June 13, 2008, JAFMArtin Ann Arbor, MI wrote: This was my first time mailordering plants, and I couldn't be happier. I think the packing peanuts are a brilliant way to secure the plants during transport, and it's fun digging around in them to get your treasures out!!!
The Blue Angel hosta was HUGE - so much nicer than I was expecting. All the other plants are doing very well, I'm a complete n00b at the whole gardening thing but their website and catalog really inspire me. (I ordered a fern, some columbine, delphinium, hosta and blanket flowers).
One of my plants had a slug on it! I was all "Welcome to Wolverine country, you Buckeye gastropod!" I had never seen one up close, so I was actually kinda fascinated, and there was no damage to any of my plants at all.
So all in all - quick shipping, quality packaging, stellar product, great price, and they sent me a new friend. A+ all the way! | | Positive | Luv_Perennials (2 reviews) | On June 12, 2008, Luv_Perennials Cincinnati, OH wrote: First of all, I would rate this company an A++ due to my consistently good experience with them over the past 6 years. Most recently, I ordered over $70 worth of plants during the half-price sale ($140 or more value) and when I received them I was horrified by the state they were in. I can best describe this as most like shake-n-bake: the plant were in a box 5x too big and dirt, packing peanuts, and pots were everywhere along with hot and humid air. The plants did not look well, and very beat up. Upon closer inspection it was clear that along the way they were repackaged by the the delivery service since it was not a bluestone box, the address label was cut out and taped to this box and it was missing the miniture agricultural label. I called Bluestone and within 5 minutes, I had a replacement order entered by very helpful staff. I have received this order and all plants are looking great and should do well. | | Positive | dukestere (2 reviews) | On June 10, 2008, dukestere Lima, OH wrote: I placed my first 2 orders with Bluestone this spring based on the good feedback they had received. I was not disappointed! Everything came in great shape. My problem was our Ohio spring was not cooperating with my planting plans. It rained and was too cold to plant most of the plants, consequently, some of the plants did not care for life in my sunroom waiting for to go in the ground. But when I was able to finaly get them planted, four plants did not survive. I emailed Bluestone about the loss and they sent out the replacements the next day! After woeful transactions with SpringHill who delayed shipments 3 months from the original ship date, the process from internet order to delivery was 12 days! I took advantage of the end-of-season sale and am hugely impressed that they are not bare root, but potted shrubs, big thumbs up!

I received all my plants except for the miniature hollyhocks, which I learned wouldn't be available until August. I didn't want to wait that long, so the very helpful customer service rep offered to cancel them and send me my choice of a substitution which is still available for shipping right now. I decided on blue scabiosa to replace the hollyhocks, which I think I will enjoy more, anyway. And even though the scabbys cost slightly more than the hollyhocks, she made an even trade so I wouldn't owe anymore money. Now that's great service! Thus far, the other plants seem healthy. I will definitely order from this company again. I like their broad selection.
On June 12th, 2008, flowermaiden added the following:
An update: The three scabiosas I had requested in lieu of the mini hollyhocks arrived today -- June 11th. Since they said they would ship them out on the 9th, this is very fast service. The scabbys are all nice and green, leafy and with buds already formed. As soon as it stops raining, I\'ll be planting them outside in my beds.
Bluestone Perennials is a topnotch company that I would currently recommend to anyone interested in the convenience of using a mail-order nursery.

When I explained this to Pat (who emailed a quick response) I was offered another selection which pleased me. I understand that sometimes a crop could be lost for various reasons. When my second order arrived it contained another credit voucher for the difference in cost for the replacement as well as the substitute I requested and the "prize" plant that was originally backordered.
