I have just joined daves garden and I am excited about all the information available here. I am in my second year of growing cut flowers commercially. Last year I primarily sold to florists (lots of work, and many want you to practically give them) and made bouquets for co-workers (my favorite!). This year I plan to try a booth at a craft fair on the weekends in downtown Portland, probably Saturday only. I will sell ready made bouquets as well as assemble them on demand.
I grow on about an acre at my Mom's farm...great soil and location. Last year I planted practically all annuals, but in the fall put in a good base of perennials. I also seeded a lot of perennials this year. My plantings last year were:
Gaura, Stocks, Snapdragon, Ageratum, Cerinthe, Scabiosa, Lavatera, Leonitis, Monarda, Statice, Lupine, Rudbeckias, Glads, Asters, Cleome, Lisianthus, Flax, Amaranth, Dahlia, Honeysuckle, Calendula, Sweet Peas, Zinnia and Sunflowers, Cape Daisy, some woody shrubs.
My most successful crops were Zinnia, Sweet Peas, Asters, Statice, Rudbeckia.
My least successful were Cape Daisy (they close at night!), Snapdragons (some disease), Lisianthus (hopeless from seed), Stocks (really crooked stems).
This year I also intend to branch into Roses, more dried material (grasses, pods, roses for wreath making), and a few more woody shrubs.
I am truly loving this but it will be a learning and building process. I come from a farming family so I'm not a total greenhorn, but there are always new techniques and ideas to be shared. I have always loved flowers and they seem to be my passion now.
